ST. FRANCIS BOYS’ HOME
The Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Francis came into existence in 1901 as a response to the death and devastation caused by the droughts and plagues that were continually ravaging the country in the 19th century, particularly towards its end. It was the extraordinary zeal and enthusiasm of our founder late Bro. Paulus Moritz, who had first hand experience tending to the victims in the Northern parts of the country that led to the establishment of the St. Francis Orphanage in Bombay in 1908. It was then only a thatched house sheltering 80 orphans. What began with an orphanage has grown and spread to vast fields of service and social welfare. Today, even after 10 decades, this mission has been illuminating the lives of over 200 orphans, irrespective of caste, creed and affiliations.
St. Francis Orphanage is a boarding school specifically built to give shelter to the poor, the needy, the orphan, the destitute, in short, anyone who can be counted as the least of our brothers’. There, no one is an orphan; there is a Hand over every child. The Brothers and staff are always with the boys, whether at play, study, work or prayer.
It has been their primary concern to develop each child’s potential to the fullest. They seek their all-round development through sports, music and other co-curricular activities. In some deserving cases, we rehabilitate orphan inmates by providing them with technical training to earn their livelihood. Thousands of inmates over the years have excelled and many have made a mark in the world of science, arts, medicine, technology, music, sports, and the religious life.
ST. FRANCIS INDUSTRIAL TRAINING INSTITUTE
St. Francis Industrial Training Institute, run by the Franciscan Missionary Brothers, was established in 1964 with the aim of imparting up-to-date technical education to youth, especially the less fortunate ones. The Institute is recognized by the government and is affiliated to the national council for vocational training under the Ministry of Labour Employment and Rehabilitation. It has been awarded an ‘A’ grade for the last 5 years.
Ever since its inception, the ITI has trained a number of young men all over India to develop their potential and equip them for success.
The frontiers of industry are continually expanding. Whatever development may take place in the future, there will always be a demand for technicians. Our alumni are in demand and are absorbed soon after their training. The institute arranges for campus recruitment by industrial firms at home and abroad.
In order to satisfy the ever-increasing demand, the Institute has started more one-year part-time courses. In all, the Institute conducts ten job-oriented diploma courses for those who do not have basic education but the talent and aptitude for technical work.
To give better practice with accuracy and workmanship, they undertake job works from neighbouring industries. This builds their confidence in precision jobs.
The standard of the Institute’s training is amply proved by the fact that the Directorate General of Employment and training (D.G.E. & T) in the Ministry of Labour has adjudged the Institute as one of the best I.T.Is in India. Merit Certificates were awarded to the principal six times. Many of our students have obtained the first rank at the National and State level exams.
ST. FRANCIS PREM SANGH
It is just over six years since the Franciscan Brothers started Prem Sangh - Home for the Street Children of Mumbai. The Home was blessed and inaugurated on 5th October, 2002.
The endeavour of the Congregation to bring hope into the lives of vagrant children and youth who are harassed on the streets, railway stations and other public places. Some of them are even addicted to drugs. Prem Sangh seeks to reunite and provide a social structure that will lead to resettlement with vocational as well as life skills.
During the last five years, the Centre has been providing facilities for bathing, washing, sleeping, food, medical, educational and recreational facilities to children who were harassed on the pavements where they usually spend the night. The children are free to return to their duties during the day after a refreshing bath and a nourishing breakfast.
The boys who earn during the day are encouraged to deposit their earnings in the bank. Many of them are now attending regular schools in the vicinity; the older ones are being trained in our own ITI to provide vocational training. Non-formal education coupled with counselling and training in simple skills like candle-making and tailoring furthers the Franciscan vision to rehabilitate these children into self-sufficient, productive and law-abiding citizens.
